Today, Ghana beat US in a World Cup match 2-1. Let me start off by saying that some interpretted my earlier post to indicate that I preferred Ghana to win over the U.S. That was not the case, and in fact, as I watched the game, I found myself being a much more aggressive US fan than I anticipated, particularly as they announced that the Italians were beating the Czech Republic -- which meant if the US won against Ghana, the US would advance to the round of 16.
Being the born-on-the-5th-of-July, boy from Poland, Ohio that I am, I cannot help but cheer wholeheartedly for my homeland. By the way, I'm not the type to harp about the call by a referee (or umpire or whatever the heck the official is called), but I was dismayed by the penalty that led to Ghana's second goal. It just seemed pretty tight to me. And I would say generally, the ref had a hair trigger for pulling out the yellow card on both teams, which only exacerbates the ridiculous theatrics of the players. I imagine them, prior to a game, looking in the mirror and making feigned expressions of pain and anguish. Give me a break!Anyway, the U.S. had it's chances but failed to capitalize. And Ghana played strong and deserves to advance. I have to say, having so many Ghanaian friends locally, that I share in their joy, and in all of Africa's, over the advancement of their team. It would be one of the
greatest upsets in football history for Ghana to defeat Brazil, and much as I love Brazilian music, and culture, and their style of football, I would love to see Ghana win that game!
The cool thing is, I already have the right shoes (see my Haiti! post)!
Ghana Gana!

As for the reffing, the World Cup seems to me to be on par with the crap we accept from the NBA ... but unlike the NBA, people are actually allowed to criticize the World Cup refs who make the crap calls.
I've enjoyed the lil' bit of The World Cup that I've seen. But I'll admit I spent much more time watching the Oregon State Beavers incredible and thrilling run to victory in the College World Series.
Man, Ghana looked great against Brazil...a mistake in playing the offside trap, a missed off-side call and they were right in the game. 0-3 doestnt begin to tell the story of that match. They outplayed Brasil, they should have won.
